Working in business means working with and interacting with many people. People come with opinions…lots of them. So, in almost every work interaction we have to engage with opinions, many of which are can be in conflict with each other. People tend to have many different thoughts on ways to accomplish something, solve a problem or make a decision.
I have come to the realization that there is no “right” or “wrong” when it comes to opinions on how to do something. However, there are implications to those opinions. Our jobs as facilitators and drivers of progress is to identify these implications so that we can make informed decisions. For example, there may be two solutions to a particular problem where one is a strategic solution but it requires significant cost and time and the other may be more tactical. If the problem is time sensitive than the second option may be a better option but it requires transparency that it may not be the best long term solution.
We need to take a mindset that focuses on implications and this way we stay out of arguing over “right” and “wrong” and just realize that there are actions and results of those actions. Because you know what is said about opinions….
