MenTor or TorMent?

In my twenty one professional career I have had many mentors. Some were assigned to me and some I sought out myself. I have also seen many mentoring programs in the multiple companies that I have worked for. The models where someone is assigned does not seem to be the most effective model. The meetings and conversations seemed forced and quickly become surface-level “how are things” conversations which don’t necessarily help the mentee and usually fade after a few instances.

Mentoring should be natural with someone who is viewed as being able to provide insight, understands the work of the mentee and has rapport. If the relationship is not natural and comfortable it will be seen more as TorMenting than MenToring.
