Creating an “ustimate”

Project estimation is an art but a critical part of any project since it sets expectations for cost and delivery. It is usually done early in a project when there are not a lot of resources involved so many times it is on the PM or architect to work on the estimates. But doing estimates in a vacuum has a lot of challenges associated to it…

  • Key details or assumptions may be missed
  • The people who have deliver against the work were not involved and won’t feel accountable
  • It is hard to hold people responsible for estimates they did not create

So the key is to involve the areas who will be delivering the work in the estimation process..thus creating an “ustimate” so that it is an “us” activity and people feel involved and accountable.
