Farm animals

One of my favorite business anecdotes is that of chickens and pigs related to commitment. In the analogy of making breakfast, the chicken is involved (they make eggs) but the pig is committed (used for bacon). This is an important distinction to have on project teams because team members need to recognize their own level of involvement or commitment as does the Project Manager. Critical team members who should have commitment, but only feel involved will not demonstrate the sense of ownership and urgency required for a commitment.

Along with the chickens and pigs, there are roosters who stand on the side and make a lot of noise but not really involved. So start thinking about the farm animals and how they play out on your team. Hopefully none of them will wind up be cooked in the end!
