What do you need?

A big part of management is reporting. In order to understand progress and report on it we are always asking for information and status. But we need to remember that management is not just a one way information flow from the team and that we need to be constantly asking the team “what do you need?”

Part of our job is to understand what needs the team may have to be successful and then to help get it for them. This could be resources, money, time, decisions, information or access to certain stakeholders. Not all team members are forthcoming with the key risks and issues (for many reasons) so it is important to ask the question.

This may not be possible every time to accommodate but then at least we can understand the need and facilitate the right conversation to understand impacts, options and implications.
