Anyone living in the U.S. and not under a rock in the last week knows that we had an enormous hurricane slam into the East coast of the U.S. Millions were without power, many areas flooded and there was a ton of damage. I have to say, that through this I think that the Governor of Connecticut did a tremendous job and would make a great program manager.
Here are some examples of how Gov Malloy acted as a great program manager.
- Have a plan – there were plans for all aspects of the storm that included protecting electrical plants, routing people and cutting down trees in advance
- Risk management – focusing on ways to minimize the risks of damage by having trees cut down before the storm hit
- Contingency planning such as having generators and shelters
- Communications – Malloy did a fantastic job with news briefs and keeping people informed of status
- Management of expectations – Keeping stakeholders aware of expectations for power loss, staying off of roads and school closings
While the outcome wasnt great, we did the best we could in the scenario thanks to some great leadership and management.
