Classic Workplace Moves: Cell Phone Ringing At Desk

To continue with my “Classic Workplace Moves” series I have to also add the co-worker who leaves their cellphone at their desk when they are away at meetings only to have it ring loudly for long periods of time (and usually with a non-work-appropriate ring tone).

There are a few possible actions that one can take

  • Let it continue to play “Funkytown” at high decibel levels for the day and try to ignore it
  • Sing along with the tones
  • Go over and turn it off which may be weird since it is someone else’s property
  • Wait and tell them that their phone keeps ringing

"Love Shack Baby... "

In any case it is annoying because it puts the onus on everyone else to deal with it or confront them on it. That is why my cell phone is always on vibrate and attached to me at all times. This also prevents the outburst of “The Humpty Dance” or “Whoomp There It Is” during a critical business meeting.
